How to Get Your Marriage License in Arizona
How to obtain your marriage license in Arizona is one of the most common questions I receive from my couples.
So let’s dive in!
The process is actually less complicated than you might think.
Visit the County Clerk’s Office
You first step in obtaining your marriage license is heading to an Arizona County Clerk’s Office of your choice. If you’re getting married in Phoenix, most couples obviously go to one of the county clerk’s office in Maricopa county. If you’re getting married up north (e.g. Sedona), most of my couples actually head to the County Clerk’s Office in Flagstaff.
Here are the links to both offices for your reference:
- Coconino County (Flagstaff): http://www.coconino.az.gov/134/Marriage-Licenses
- Maricopa County (Phoenix): http://clerkofcourt.maricopa.gov/marlic.asp
What to bring when to the County Clerk’s Office:
- You must be 18 years or older.
- You must bring two forms of valid ID (One must have your photo).
- You and your partner must go to the County Clerk’s Office together.
Note: Arizona does not require a blood test to get marriage license and your license will expire one year after the date it is issued.
What to expect:
When arrive, you will take a number/stand in line to wait for the next available staff member. Once you meet with someone, they will verify your forms of ID. Then you’ll receive your license while at the recorder’s office. Expect to pay around $100 in fees.
You have your Marriage License – now what?
Be sure to keep track of that lovely envelope. Bring your license with you the day of the wedding (or whenever you decide to sign your license). You, your new spouse, your officiant and two witnesses (usually your maid of honor and best man) will all need to sign the document together. (If you’re signing your license on your wedding day – this is a great “photo op” moment that usually takes place after the ceremony. ☺)
Then once the document is signed, you or your officiant will mail back the signed license after your ceremony. (This is a key step that – believe it or not – is sometimes forgotten! Ha!)
Then…
Approximately 6 weeks after you mail in your signed license, you will receive your official “marriage certificate”!
Ta da! You’re all done! Pretty simple right? Don’t let getting your marriage license be a stress at all. It is a very simple process and is an easy task to check off your list!
Happy Planning!
