5 After Honeymoon Habits You Should Start Now!

Post Honeymoon Habits Tropical Beach Couple

You just returned from your epic honeymoon and the afterglow of your wedding is fading quickly.  As the reality of everyday life starts to set in, it is very important to make an effort to start new habits to keep evolving your relationship.

The best news is – this is just the beginning! There are still so many adventures to be had!

Here are 5 habits to start right away after your honeymoon to strengthen your marriage and help you fight the post wedding blues!

  1. Schedule a little time everyday when you can unwind together. (Maybe an evening walk after dinner?)
  2. Schedule regular date nights. Do something romantic and special at least once a week.
  3. Find a new project or activity you can do together – just the two of you. Learn a new language together. Read the same book.
  4. Integrate each other into each other’s communities.
  5. Plan something to look forward to.

The Kiss

Last, but not least, I encourage you to make sure you kiss each other every day! Not just a hello or goodbye kiss… but a good long kiss! I know this sounds silly. But I promise you – it is important!!

NEXT STEPS

It is hard to adopt new habits all at once. I encourage you to choose one a week (or every other week) until you have incorporated all of these habits into your daily life together. The goal is to make a conscious effort to find time to nurture your relationship. As long as this is a priority for both of you – your marriage will continue to strengthen with time!

Thought for the Day

Importance of Specific Gratitude

Oak Creek Canyon Sedona Arizona Casey Green Weddings

Don’t you just love Thanksgiving?! It is by far my favorite holiday! I think it’s because it’s simply an excuse to get together with your friends and family, eat delicious food, hang out and count your blessings! What a fabulous holiday!

Every Thanksgiving, like you, I always try to remember to focus on being grateful for the many blessings in my life. This is something I try to do everyday – but usually forget to do fully. The craziness of the day takes over.  I know deep down I am thankful for the good things that happen everyday in my life, but I often don’t take the time to be specific about what I am thankful for.

And I think I am missing out by just being generally grateful and not specifically grateful.

Identifying specifically what you’re thankful for in your life is VERY powerful. Being specific helps your clarify those things and experiences you would like more of.  It helps you begin to attract more of these types of experiences and help you grow and create the life you’ve always dreamed of creating.

Therefore, this Thanksgiving – let’s be specifically grateful!

Let’s take a little time and write down (in detail) all of the many things we love in our life and would like more of.  If you take the time to do this, I think you will be amazed at what you discover – and how good it feels to really focus on the good in our lives – instead of the lack and stress that often creep into our subconscious. 🙂

ACTION STEPS

Write down a specific, detailed list of all the things you’re grateful for in your life.  Describe why you love the people and experiences in your life. I promise this will be a fun and enlightening exercise. You’re guaranteed to feel good after this little exercise.

Happy Thanksgiving!

-Casey

To First Look or Not To First Look…

Blush-and-Beige-Oklahoma-Wedding-First-Look-600x800

Ah…it’s the age old question – to have a first look or not?

Like most things in life, there are pros and cons to both. Let’s explore both options to help you determine what is best for your wedding.

First Things First – What is the “first look”?

Because I eat and sleep weddings, the term “first look” is pretty common. However, if you’re just starting to plan your wedding, you may be wondering what the heck I’m talking about. So, if that’s you, let me explain.

The “first look” is a scheduled time before your wedding ceremony. Your first look is scheduled after you and your fiance are all dressed up and ready for your wedding ceremony. You will usually work with your photographer and your planner to choose a beautiful, secluded location where you can “stage” the look. Your photographer will also usually be there to capture this moment –  which almost always creates wonderfully, emotional and touching images. (First look images are almost always my favorite images from the entire wedding!)  The first look allows you to have an intimate moment prior to your wedding ceremony, when you’re not on display in front of your family and friends, and you can just be together. Many couples use the first look as a time to exchange love letters, give each other special gifts or just enjoy one more moment of loving affirmation before the your ceremony.

Cons of the First Look

Some couples are unsure about the first look because they have dreamed of having that moment of surprise when the groom looks down the aisle to see the bride for the first time. Couples sometimes worry scheduling a first look will take away from this experience. Personally, I think this is less of an issue than couples imagine it to be. Even if you decide to do a first look, the moment you see each other down the aisle is still special. The energy of the ceremony is intense – and you will still feel that emotional excitement in that moment.

Benefits of the First Look

There are many benefits to the “first look”. The first (and most helpful benefit) is allowing you (and your photographer) plenty of time of your wedding photography. If you’re open to scheduling a first look, you afford yourself the opportunity to take the majority of your wedding photographs before the ceremony. This takes the pressure off of the cocktail hour after the ceremony. Therefore, the first look allows you to simply enjoy your cocktail hour and reception – without worrying you only have 45 minutes before sunset for all of you wedding photos.

The second benefit is the first look allows for one more intimate moment of connection between you and the love of your life. At the end of the day, your wedding is all about you and your fiancee – right?.  A first look carves out a little time on the hectic wedding day that is just for the two of you. It’s a really special time when you can just be together before the excitement of the wedding.

How to determine what is the best choice for you?

I encourage all of my couples to consider incorporating a first look into their wedding day timeline. Most of the time the benefits of a first look out way the negatives. However, if it doesn’t feel right in your gut – don’t do it. I will say from experience, the first look relieves a lot of pressure and stress from the wedding day.

If you follow this process – and I know you’ll make the right decision for you.

  • Review your wedding day timeline
  • Create “what-if” scenarios
  • Listen to your gut
  • Talk to your fiance about it

Still not sure what to do? I always say trust your gut instinct. All things being equal what feels best initially (without overthinking it). This is almost always the right decision for you.
