3 Tips to Survive the Holidays as a Couple
As we approach the holidays you may be having the internal negoiation with your fiance regarding where and with whom will you be spending the holidays. You may find this can be a source of stress for both of you. More than likely each of you have your own family traditions and holiday routines with your own family. Embarking on the holidays as a couple always calls for comprise.
Here are a few tips to help you negioate this tricky time peacefully. 🙂
Aim for compromise
Consider splitting the holidays. Spend one holiday with your folks and spend the other holiday with his. Or if this won’t do, consider splitting the actually day. Have Thanksgiving lunch with his family and then head over to your family’s home for dinner. I know it may involve a lot of traveling – but keeping the peace within both of your families might be worth it.
Offer to host
Instead of running yourselves ragged all over the place. Consider inviting both parents and families to your place for either or both of the upcoming holidays. If you like to cook and entertain, this may be just the ticket for you. This will give you the opportunity to introduce your families together. It will also display you and your fiance as a united front and a couple to your community. The holidays are a wonderful time to show this transition in your relationship.
Consider starting your own tradition
You are creating your new life together. You might want to consider, making your short appearances at either family occasion short and sweet. Then with your extra free time, create a Thanksgiving meal just for the two of you. Or maybe you both sneak away, go see a movie together and order take out on your way home. Don’t be afraid to make your own rules when it comes to your holiday plans.
