How to Write a Killer Toast – Maid of Honor Style
So you’re elated your best friend as you to be her Maid of Honor! You’re going to have so much fun being a part of the preparation to her big day! …then the fear sets in… Wait, along with planning the bachelorette party and going dress shopping, the Maid of Honor also has to give a speech at the reception – YIKES!!!
I know, giving a toast for your best friend can be a lot of pressure. To ease your fear, here is my guide to helping you craft a killer toast that will leave a positive lasting impression on your best friend and the rest of her guests at her wedding.
Opening – How to Begin
Start by briefly explaining who you are and how you know the bride. Remember to keep this straight and to the point – and avoid jokes. Staying heart felt in the beginning is a good idea.
Share a Bride Story
After your quick introduction, share a flattering short story about the bride. Be sure this story exemplifies why you love her. Focus on the bride’s positive attributes. Remember to be careful not to make the story about you – keep the bride as the star of the story.
Tell Her Love Story from Your Perspective
Describe how you knew she finally had met “The One”. Talk about the beginning of the bride’s relationship to her new partner from your perspective. Remember to only mention the positive highlights. Skip any initial drama that might have occurred in their relationship. Also, be careful not to bring up any past relationships or embarrassing stories.
Love on the Groom
Explain what you love most about the groom. Talk about his most charming and endearing personality traits. Give him props for any romantic things he might have done for the bride when they were dating.
Support Them as a Couple
Conclude by talking about how they bring out the best qualities in each other and why they “work” as a couple.
Finally remember these additional tips:
Stay positive in your speech
Avoid talking about yourself too much
No inside jokes – keep it classy
Don’t mention you don’t know the groom very well
Don’t talk too long – Short is always best!!
Action Steps
Now that you have your outline – start writing! Remember, just get everything out first. Then go back and edit. Before you know it, you will have a stellar, heart felt speech that will be remembered for years to come!
Happy Planning!
